FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect during my upcoming photoshoot?

My favorite part of photography is capturing real moments, laughs, smiles, and interactions between families and loved ones. I would say that my approach is quite laidback and half-posed, half-documentary. I will give you guidance for positioning your body in ways that photograph well, but I encourage you to interact with each other more than looking in the camera and forcing smiles. Usually the first ten minutes are spent warming up and getting used to the camera. For couples with or without children, I encourage you to always be touching/connected in some way and be snuggled in closer than what may feel natural. Tickles, telling jokes, whispering secrets, jumping, running, tossing kids in the air, holding hands are great ways to produce fun, authentic moments. Don’t be afraid to get silly!

For outdoor sessions, what should I bring?

Not much at all! Don’t bring your purse. Typically I can carry your keys or phone if you need them. I tend to have more of a minimalist style and so I don’t do a lot of props. However, if there is something special that you want in your photos, you are welcome to bring it. Sometimes I bring a blanket or quilt to use during seated photos so if you have a special blanket that you would like you use, please bring it along.

For in-home sessions, how can I prepare?

The most important element to in-home sessions is the natural light. When I get to your home, you can show me a few places in your home that get the best lighting. Usually this is in the living room, master bedroom and nursery, possibly the kitchen. Occasionally I have to do a little rearranging to make sure you are facing the light properly. Try not to stress about your house being spotless, but focus more on decluttering the areas you think we will shoot in. Simple is always better and sometimes that means less photos hanging on the wall, less things on your dresser or side tables, etc.

What should I wear?

Living in the midwest, we never know what we are going to get. Unless it is pouring/hailing/storming/freezing/blizzarding, we will keep your session date the same. we can always touch base before the session and evaluate if a rain check is needed but I do not reschedule sessions for cloudy days!
